If AI is to transform work, it must start transforming our schools now

About the publisher: Nicholas Goldberg’s column on artificial intelligence and its role in the workplace is one of the best articles I’ve read on the AI reform work.
Today’s K-12 students are preparing for jobs that don’t yet exist. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of being flexible and resolving issues quickly. I can only agree with public policy professor Harry J. Holzer that elementary education needs to be rebuilt to prepare for the 21st century and teach our students communication skills, critical thinking skills, and creativity.
I can’t help feeling that we’ve missed a golden opportunity to restore public education after the pandemic. Instead, I see schools dusting off the pre-pandemic textbook to prepare students for the annual standardized tests, just as they did decades before.

About the publisher: Goldberg wonders if AI will allow us a four-day work week. That’s a big question.
The eight-hour day became the rallying cry of organized labor in the United States in 1866. In 1940, the 40-hour work week was legislated. Technological advancements and productivity have skyrocketed since then, but our working hours have not changed.
For every progress, the carrot of more free time dangles in front of us, but workers never really seem to have it. Why should that be any different with AI?
The hard fact is that we don’t vote democratically to accept advances. They are forced upon us. Usually progress brings great benefits, but also difficulties, as our system tends to favor a few.
If we could choose to accept technological advancements, we could make our consent conditional on certain conditions, such as: B. a four-day work week.
But I won’t hold my breath.
