The first black astronaut to the moon whose progress is this?

About the editor: “One Giant Leap for an Entire Race” The headline of your print for the article about astronaut Victor Glover Jr.’s choice. for NASA’s next lunar mission may be an apt title, but the “race” in question isn’t black.

To quote Chris Rock on Barack Obama’s election as president: “It’s not black progress. It’s white progress.

Likewise, there have long been black astronauts willing and able to take on any NASA mission. It’s not black progress that Glover will break this barrier, it’s NASA’s.

About the editor: Thank you for emphasizing the importance of Glover piloting NASA’s Artemis II mission to the moon next year. Reporter Tyrone Beason wrote a beautiful and powerful story about the importance of the moon in black American history.

The printed headline wasn’t quite right though, and I’d like to give this thought: yes, his roster is a giant leap forward for an entire race. More importantly, it is a giant leap for all of humanity.

When a person pushes through a previously unopened door, it’s a win for all of us. In the first place, access should not be refused. We all enjoy greeting that person on the other end with a smile, applause, and congratulations.

Well done Mr Glover. May you have a great and safe journey.
