“Run, Hide, Fight”: After Louisville, we’re at mass shootings
letters to the editor

About the editor: Police say the Louisville, Kentucky, gunman bought the assault rifle he used to kill five people on Monday, a week before his killing spree. We’ve been told that the best way to survive a mass shooting is to “run, hide and fight”.
So here we are as a society. There is now a survival manual.
Offensive weapons of mass destruction aren’t going anywhere, so your best bet is to run, hide and fight, and if that doesn’t work, die.

About the editor: Are we so moved by mass shootings that the one in Louisville only made page A-12 of the next day’s LA Times?
If we want lawmakers to do something about this problem, we can’t bury the stories in the back of the paper like we don’t care.
Mike Green, Oak Park..
About the editor: It seems clear that solving the problem of mass shootings should focus on why politicians are not doing anything. If gun violence is the number one killer of American children, politicians should be motivated enough to pass laws that can protect children.
A study needs to be done on the psychology of legislators so unmoved by infant mortality that they excuse their inaction and fight aggressively for gun owners’ rights whenever mass shootings occur. Instead of looking for real solutions to the problem of gun violence, they support the 2nd Amendment.
We must hold our flag at half-mast until we realize that the problem lies with the politicians.

About the editor: The Republican Party has made it clear that no new gun laws are being considered, even as mass shooters kill young people, the elderly and police nearly every day.
Leaders in conservative states have doubled down on lifting restrictions and allowing unlicensed public transportation.
It’s time for sensible Republicans, Independents and Democrats to vote on legislation that would ban assault weapons and major magazines and introduce universal background checks.

About the editor: US Forecast: Cloudy with a high chance of gunfire.
