Why Abortion, Not Trump’s Impeachment, Could Drown Republicans In 2024

letters to the editor

April 4, 2023

About the publisher: If former President Trump becomes the GOP nominee in 2024, party leaders’ decision to rally around him could be much more costly than they think. (“The GOP made a deal with Trump; the bill is coming,” March 31)

Trump can be attacked as the person most responsible for Roe vs. Wade. After Trump won the presidency in 2016, he appointed three far-right, activist Supreme Court justices who were instrumental in overthrowing Roe.

If Trump becomes the GOP nominee, Democrats need to put Trump’s assault on women’s rights at the center of their campaigns. And they should target these attacks not just at Trump, but at all of his GOP enablers.

While the GOP will try to paint indicted Trump as a martyr, Democrats would do well not to let Republicans use the impeachment as a distraction. You need to focus on how devastating Trump’s first presidency was to women’s health, autonomy, and rights.

About the publisher: The Republican Party’s line is that impeachment against Trump in Manhattan is a politically motivated impeachment trial.

On the other hand, if anything shows political motivation, it’s the incredibly long delay in filing charges in various jurisdictions for numerous well-documented wrongdoings by Trump. If any of this had been committed by someone not nearly as prominent, he would have been charged and brought to justice years ago.

I fear that history will record Trump’s late indictments as yet another example of late justice being denied.

About the publisher: As far as I know, Trump has only said one revealing thing in his life.

When he said, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters,” he was making an exaggerated claim that turned out to be perfectly reasonable. It was also a look at his decision-making.

If he honestly felt that there would be no consequences for outward behavior, there was nothing to stop him. Morale is clearly not a factor.

If Trump’s supporters admit that he finally crossed the line, they’ll have to admit they’ve been wrong all along. GOP leaders and Fox News have long known that Trump was a disaster, but they made a deal with the devil. Now they fear that if they turn against him, they will alienate themselves from the same mob that gives them power and money.

So the fantasy continues. Democracy and the rule of law are at stake. Hush money is a small potato, but it’s the first step. The January 6 uprising and attempted electoral fraud in Georgia will be everything.

Lance Keller, Hermosa Beach.

About the publisher: Mike Pence said: “The unprecedented indictment of a former president of the United States on a campaign finance issue is outrageous.”

In other words, he may have committed a crime, but it wasn’t bad enough to be held accountable. Absolutely gorgeous.
