Alvin Bragg Made America Great Again

letters to the editor

March 31, 2023

About the publisher: No one is above the law. However, in a country of more than 330 million people, there was one person who never broke the law, and that is Manhattan Dist. attentive Alvin Bragg presented his case against former President Trump to the grand jury, which responded with an indictment.

More charges could follow, both in Georgia and in federal courts.

Should I perhaps revise my previous assessment that no one is above the law? Maybe not. The courage and dedication Bragg showed in the face of death threats is an example we should all follow.

Cassie Bryer, Los Angeles

About the publisher: I thought the Trump investigation would succumb and he would emerge victorious because his mime and Fox News had a louder voice. I was wrong.

After receiving death threats, Bragg and the Manhattan grand jury courageously investigated the facts and upheld the charges.

With the former president due to appear in court next week, there is also a problem that I believe has never been seen in the history of our country. Current and former presidents are protected for life. If Trump has to serve a sentence, should his intelligence data be on the alert as well?

Don A Norman, Los Angeles

About the publisher: Trump’s impeachment after more than 200 years in office removes what is left of an American monarchy.

The president is above the law and none of them have ever been prosecuted for alleged wrongdoing.

When the constitution was written, the president was given special powers. Whoever held the office could pardon anyone convicted of a crime, effectively overriding the rule of law. This is a power and a privilege normally bestowed upon monarchs.

But today the president is one of us.

About the publisher: Criminal penalties are designed to deter the offender and others from future illegal acts.

Our society demands compliance with the laws of the mentally ill, who often have trouble distinguishing between reality and delusion. We can certainly also demand that from business and politics.

While no sane person can expect Trump to ever show remorse, our only chance of deterring future lawlessness by others is to subject him to legal consequences for criminal activity.

Joel Koury, Santa MonicaThe author is a criminal defense attorney…

About the publisher: Two politicians with legal problems made it to the Friday newspaper.

Trump’s party has been mentioned more than 16 times. The party of suspended LA City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was convicted Thursday in his federal corruption trial, was named nil.

And the LA Times has no bias?

Greg Badovinac, North Hollywood..

About the publisher: In fact, Trump’s indictment of elusive white-collar crime pales in comparison to the potentially insidious larger crimes also pending.

But if a criminal robs a bank, burns down a building and also commits another crime, he still breaks the law and commits three crimes. You must answer for everyone.

We have a cultural flaw where our president is seen as some kind of untouchable king. Our abiding fascination with the British monarchy is proof of this. Former Presidents Nixon and Trump, both of whom have disgraced the office, have taken advantage of it.

Our laws must apply equally to all of us or they mean nothing.

Mark Diniakos, Thousand Oaks

..

About the publisher: Trump’s money was well spent, wasn’t it? That certainly kept the Stormy Daniels storyline quiet, didn’t it?

Maureen Cobas, Pomona, California.

About the publisher: Alvin Bragg made America great again.

Alan Segal, San Diego.

About the publisher: I woke up Friday morning to important news for our country, and especially wonderful for those of us who have been praying for some accountability for the corrupt leader of the previous administration.

So I wasn’t surprised that Friday’s paper chose the Trump impeachment story as its cover story. The other title articles were also important.

But I searched in vain that day for the special headline this city and county deserved after the Dodgers opened their season with a blistering victory over their rival.

We Dodger fans couldn’t have that grinning banner anywhere on the front page. We missed an opportunity to briefly enjoy the glory of an opening day win as Trump was outplayed by the Dodgers.
