Where I used to be able to keep my eyes on the road while changing the radio channel or climate control by pressing a certain key or button, now I have to look at the screen to find the exact spot to touch.

It’s only been about six weeks since my car was surrounded by a driver in a Tesla driving out of his apartment complex. He looked down and slightly to the right and kept rolling right into me. Now my car is in the workshop and is getting two new passenger doors.

Did anyone think this would be a bad idea? Do you operate so many functions in our car with a touchscreen? There will always be more accidents, and not just because of the phones.

About the publisher: I agree that driving got out of hand while using a phone. The fast lane became the phone lane.

When I visited the British Isles, including Ireland, last year, my cousin told me to make sure I didn’t use my phone while driving while on the phone. I was told I would get the equivalent of a drink ticket if caught.

There are areas on highways where you must stop to make a call. If there’s a program on the radio that encourages calls, they tell you to go where it’s safe to use the phone.

Everything works great. Keep it dumb.

When I recently bought an electric car, I was shocked by the number of basic and optional items available that tempt drivers to take their mind off driving. Nearly every car made today is equipped with “infotainment” centers designed to enrich the driving experience in ways an astronaut might find confusing.
