About the publisher: On January 6, 2021, after four years of flattering devotion to President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence obeyed the Constitution as required of him. We honor him for that. (“Obeying the law on January 6 was the least Pence could do. Why are we praising him?” Opinion, March 14)
Two years later, Pence expressed anger and blamed Trump, but as columnist Jonah Goldberg points out, he declined interviews with the Justice Department and the January 6 commission. Why would Pence want to protect Trump who endangered his family’s life on January 6?
Goldberg knows that political calculation is part of the candidacy. I think Pence expected him to succeed Trump. He tried to position himself as the least opponent of pro- and anti-Trumpers and favored by independents.
We are a divided nation that needs honest, transparent and non-discriminatory public servants. That’s not how I see Pence.

About the publisher: Goldberg prefers not to see the obvious. Our country is divided into three voting factions, not two: the MAGA mob, the Democrats, and the Undecided, which today apparently includes voters we used to call Republicans.
No candidate can win the presidency with the votes of just one of these groups.
Republicans running for president must satisfy both the MAGA mob and a few undecided. It requires them to say things they don’t really believe and things they actually do.
The guessing game, especially for the doubters, is figuring out which statements the candidates believe and which they don’t. There is no chance that the candidates will actually tell them or be consistent in what they say, because that would mean winning some votes and losing others.

About the publisher: How confident is Goldberg that Pence wanted to do the right thing on January 6?
I remember reading several stories about Pence asking conservative leaders if he had the power to throw the election at Trump. Former Vice President Dan Quayle reportedly replied that Pence had no authority to change the election results.
As a lifelong Democrat, I am shocked that Quayle, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) stand for the truth.
Only in the last two decades has the GOP evolved into a win-at-all-cost party. God help us all when the entire federal government takes over again.

About the publisher: I was very relieved that on January 6, Pence decided to do the right thing. Since then I have been disgusted by his cowardice.
No man or father I know whose wife and child were endangered on January 6 would have so little to say from January 7. Pence’s reluctance to speak to the Justice Department or the January 6 committee spoke volumes to me about his lack of character.
