About the publisher: I moved to Lake Arrowhead from Los Angeles ten years ago and plan to stay there for five or six years maximum. Like many city dwellers, I thought living in a small mountain town would be appealing. Three years ago, the pandemic changed my plans to go. (“LA’s snow-capped mountains are a glorious glimpse,” Opinion, Feb. 28.)
Ten years now feels like 100. The storms that have devastated this community have highlighted the dangers of not having the proper infrastructure or resources to deal with such an emergency. Our pathetic Caltrans snowplow equipment is overwhelmed.
The residents of this community do not like “government interference”. This is a stronghold of Trump. need I say more In these mountain communities there is open racism; Children from the local high school wave Confederate flags.
Now these same anti-government types are desperate for provincial and state services after this monster storm. They hate big government until they need help.
Once the snow is gone, we put a “For Sale” sign on our house.

About the publisher: Yes, the views of snow-capped mountains from Los Angeles are beautiful, as Tony Barboza writes. But for those of us who live here and are trapped in our homes, this is a terrible emergency.
The snow covered all the light from my windows. I am 71 and healthy, but people will die here.
Chris Van Patten Bench, Twin Peaks, California.

About the publisher: I grew up in Pasadena. Our beautiful northern mountains have never been “boring”, as Barboza says, they appear almost all year round.
Its rich history even includes the Mount Lowe Railroad, Mount Wilson Observatory, and the cabins in Santa Anita Canyon. In addition, there are countless waterfalls, great hiking trails and beautiful views around every corner.
I suggest that the writers of The Times, if they find our mountains boring, get out from behind their desks and experience the grandeur for themselves.
Todd Hays, Pasadena
