‘Dollarumma’ protest: extraordinary reaction of Milan fans towards Donnarumma
AC Milan fans ‘rained’ PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with fake bills to protest his departure from the club to sign a more lucrative deal with the French national team.
The Italian goalkeeper, who grew up in the Milan infrastructure and played more than 250 times in the red and black shirt, was considered the best young goalkeeper in world football before his controversial free transfer to Paris.
Donnarumma refused to sign a new £130,000-a-week deal with Milan to extend his contract and instead signed a more lucrative deal with Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, leaving his home club empty-handed.
“MERCENARY”
For this reason, Milan fans decided to show their own reaction towards Donnarumma, who returned to San Siro for the Milan-PSG match, by throwing fake dollars during the match.
While his PSG teammate Kylian Mbappé greeted the protest with a smile at the start of the match, Donnarumma refused to take it into consideration. As fans threw fake money at the goalkeeper, Mbappe was seen standing on the halfway line and laughing.
“MERCENARY”, “DOLLARUMMA”
The counterfeit coins, which featured Donnarruma’s photo, included the words “Mercenary” and “Dollarumma.”
Furthermore, the number 71 on the coin means that the ‘Naples Smorphia’ deserves neither respect nor reverence, but only deep guilt for being ‘dishonorable’.
‘Smorphia’ is a traditional book used in Italian culture to interpret dreams and predict lottery numbers based on these interpretations.
According to this ancient tradition, the content of people’s dreams is associated with numbers that can bring them luck. Smorphia has its roots in Naples and has a rich folklore history there.
Understanding dream symbols and events helps people determine the lucky numbers they can use in the lottery game. This unique book is considered a reflection of Italian culture and beliefs, more than just a gambling guide.
“GIGI IS A GREAT PERSON”
Before the match, Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi attempted to remind Milan fans of Donnarumma’s years of service to the club.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Al-Khelaifi said: “Gigi is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He is still very young and a very good professional, but also a great person. “What he brought to Milan was incredible and I have a great respect for both AC Milan and Gigio.”
HE BECAME PROFESSIONAL AT AGE 17
Donnarumma’s excellent form at the start of his Milan career saw the goalkeeper become the youngest Italian to play for the under-21 team in March 2016, aged 17 years and 28 days.
He made 251 appearances for the Serie A giants and won the Italian Super Cup with the club in the 2016-17 season.
His decision not to sign a new contract with Milan in 2021 sparked a frenzy in the transfer market, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Juventus battling PSG for his signature.
After accepting a move to the Parc des Princes, Donnarumma helped Roberto Mancini’s Italy win the European Championship, beating England in the final after a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Wembley.
The goalkeeper quickly increased his portfolio of honors in Paris by winning consecutive Ligue 1 titles in 2022 and 2023.
