Greek football corruption investigation
It has been reported that Greece’s Supreme Court has launched an investigation into corruption and illegal practices in football.
The news from the Greek state agency AMNA states that the investigation into corruption and illegal practices in football began following the interview that the president of Panathinaikos, Yannis Alafuzos, gave to the BBC. The news reported that within the scope of the investigation to be carried out by the authorized prosecutor, Alafuzos and people whose names are associated with cases of match-fixing will be called to testify.
In his interview with the BBC, Alafuzos said: “There was violence in Greek football, because corruption generates violence and increases violence. “Corruption also makes many Greek players go abroad,” he said.
Recalling that one person died as a result of a fight between fans in Athens before the first match of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League to be played between AEK of Greece and Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia in August, Alafuzos said: “Now things are getting more difficult and it is more difficult because everyone can see what is happening,” he said.
