Situation of Russian athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: What is the IOC’s decision?
Despite the decision of the International Olympic Committee to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee, Russian athletes have a chance to participate in Paris 2024.
The IOC ruled that the Republic of Korea violated the Olympic charter by including as members regional sports organizations under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee.
These organizations come from four regions of eastern Ukraine that Russia has annexed since its invasion of the country:Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia- is coming.
But the IOC said it would “reserve the right” to decide whether Russians can compete as neutral athletes at next summer’s Olympics. It was stated that the final decision would be made “at the right time” and “close to the games”.
THEY RECEIVED A PENALTY FOR DOPING
The ROC was previously suspended by the IOC in 2017 due to a state-sponsored doping scandal, but this ban was lifted after the 2018 Winter Olympics.
They were spared the suspension after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, but the IOC recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials not participate in international competitions.
THE DOORS OF PARIS HAVE BEEN OPENED
However, in March, the IOC told sports federations that they should allow athletes from these countries to compete again as neutrals, opening the door for them to take their place at Paris 2024.
UKRAINE BOYCOTT THREAT
Ukraine threatened to boycott the Olympics if a complete ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes was not imposed.
The IOC said in its statement yesterday:
‘The Russian Olympic Committee has been suspended with immediate effect until further notice.
The IOC reserves the right to make a decision at the appropriate time on the participation of neutral athletes with Russian passports in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The International Paralympic Committee voted last month to allow Russian athletes to compete in next summer’s games.
