Sabalenka with Zheng at the US Open; Medvedev in quarterfinals with Rublev

At the US Open, the final Grand Slam tennis tournament of the season, second seeded women Aryna Sabalenka and third seeded men Daniil Medvedev reached the quarterfinals.

The tournament, which was held in New York City, continued with matches in the evening session on the eighth day.

Sabalenka of Belarus, this year’s Australian Open champion in women’s singles, faced 13th seed Daria Kasatkina. Sabalenka, who defeated her rival 2-0 with sets of 6-1 and 6-3 in the match that lasted 75 minutes, was among the last 8 rackets.

Fifth-seeded Ons Jebur of Tunisia, who played in the tournament final last year, was knocked out 2-0 by 23rd-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China in sets 6-2, 6-4.

Zheng, who reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, teamed up with Sabalenka.

MEDVEDEV AND ZVEREV IN QUARTER-FINAL

Russian Daniil Medvedev, the third seed and 2021 champion, defeated Australian Alex de Minaur, the 13th seed, 3-1 in sets of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in male singles.

Medvedev will face his compatriot and eighth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.

Twelfth seed Alexander Zverev defeated sixth seed Jannik Sinner of Italy 3-2 in sets of 6-4 3-6 6-2 4-6 6-3 to compete against the champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. (AA)
