Thun is one of eight Swiss cities hosting the European Championship in the summer of 2025. Three group games and a multi-week football festival are scheduled for the entire population, the city announced on Wednesday. The project manager is responsible for the overall organization of a major event in accordance with the specifications of the city, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) and the European Football Association (UEFA).
Sustainability in the spotlight
The city attaches great importance to sustainability in planning and implementation. The statement quoted local councilor Katarina Ali-Osh (SP) as saying that women’s football should be promoted comprehensively and sustainably in cooperation with local clubs.
UEFA awarded the European Championship to Switzerland in April 2023. In mid-June, the city council of Thun provided a loan of 3.65 million Swiss francs for the event, according to the communiqué, with two-thirds of the costs expected to be covered by the federal government and the canton.
