Historic win for Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon
Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic became champion after beating Tunisian Onza Jabeur 2-0 with 6-4 sets in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tennis tournament of the season.
Vondrousova won her first title in the second Grand Slam final of her career after the 2019 French Open. The Czech racket became the first tennis player to win an unseeded Wimbledon title in the open era. Vondrousova also became the lowest-ranked world Wimbledon champion for women.
Jabeur also lost the third Grand Slam final of her career, twice in a row, at Wimbledon.
In the women’s singles final of the tournament hosted by the English capital London, sixth seed Jabeur and the world’s 42nd seed Vondrousova met. Despite going down 4-2 in the first set where mutual serves were broken, Vondrousova, who won with a score of 6-4, took a 1-0 lead in the bout.
Jabeur, who entered the second set breaking serve, then rallied to make it 3-1. Assessing Jabeur’s critical mistakes throughout the match, Vondrousova managed to come back from 3-1 this time. The Czech tennis player, who won the second set 6-4, won the match, which lasted one hour and 20 minutes, 2-0 and reached the championship. (AA)
