Spezia Calcio’s new logo resembles a Nazi symbol
The new Spezia Calcio logo was not liked by their fans and the people of the Ligurian city. In fact, the new logo was described as “a horrible design that insults our history.” Fans have launched an online petition against the new symbol, which has been likened to a ‘Nazi symbol’, demanding that it be replaced.
While Spezia described its new logo as “a logo our fans would be proud of,” it faced backlash contrary to expectations. The new logo features an eagle figure made up of interlocking letters ‘S’ and ‘C’. However, this design was definitely not liked by fans and the people of the Ligurian city.
The reaction of the fans and the public was “Terrible and insults the history of our city.” Many fans and citizens found similarities in the team’s new logo with symbols associated with Nazi and far-right movements. In fact, an online petition was launched at change.com to change the chosen logo. The campaign stated: “You cannot trample on a symbol of more than 100 years that wrote the history of Spezia Calcio in this way.”

In the past, there have been logos that have caused political tensions in the world of football. In recent years, the rainbow colours, which UEFA refused to use in the Euro 2020 qualifying match between Germany and Hungary, to “avoid political manipulations” have created controversy.
Furthermore, in December 2019, Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi made a clear reference to fascism and received much criticism, with the inscription “Vae Victis” on his kickstand and the image of the Spartan helmet on the tricolor.
Regarding the Nazi theme, the decision was recently made to ban the jerseys with the number 88 (on the pitch and in the stands) of the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, which refers to the letter ‘H’.
