PSG coach Galtier temporarily arrested

Accusations of racism have consequences for Christophe Galtier. The outgoing Paris Saint-Germain coach and his son were taken into police custody in Nice on Friday morning.

This is a suspicion of discrimination, as the responsible prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme confirmed to the AFP news agency.

Galtier is due to appear in court on December 15, Bonhomme Abend said in a press release. The coach is under investigation for “intimidation and discrimination based on actual or perceived membership or non-membership of a particular ethnic group, nation, perceived race or religion.” He faces up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros. Galtier’s son, John Valovich Galtier, has been released and will not stand trial.

In mid-April, pre-trial proceedings against Galtier were opened. The accusations are based on an incident when Galtier was a coach at OGC Nice before moving to Paris a year ago. The coach is said to have told the club’s sporting director that there were too many black and Muslim players in the southern French national team.

Galtier, who reportedly had to vacate his post at PSG this summer in favor of former Spain coach Luis Enrique, has denied racist and Islamophobic remarks about the players during his time at Nice and is suing for defamation.
