Urs Fischer won with 21.8 per cent of the vote, ahead of Spaniard Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen. Fischer had great success with 1. FC Union Berlin and finished the season in fourth place in the German Bundesliga. At the beginning of the year, the Berliner Morgenpost named Urs Fischer Berliner of the Year.
As a coach, Fischer played over 500 games in the Swiss Super League in Zurich, Thun and Basel. He led the FCB to two league titles and one cup win. In 2018, he moved to Union Berlin and is already the second most played manager in the club’s history.
Urs Fischer was also a successful player: the 57-year-old played over 300 games for Zurich between 1984 and 1987 and again from 1995 to 2003 and won the cup in 2000. Fischer played 243 games for St. Gallen between 1987 and 1995. He had less success as a national player, playing only four matches between 1989 and 1991.
