FC St. Gallen announces another addition. Mali centre-back Abdoulaye Diaby has joined St. Gallen from Hungarian club Újpest. According to the announcement, the 22-year-old has signed a two-year contract and will wear number 15.
Sports Director Alain Sutter is very pleased. “Abdoulaye is a tall young defender. He is very good in the air and has a lot of potential,” says Alain Sutter.
The 1.95m defensive specialist moved from his hometown club Joliba AC to Royal Antwerp in 2018. For the Belgians, Diaby was used by the U21 team and was loaned to KSC Lokeren, the Belgian second highest league club, for the 2019/20 season. He then moved to Hungary for the 2021/22 season. In 45 league appearances for Újpest, Diaby scored five goals and qualified four times for the UEFA Conference League.
How much money St. Gallen transferred to Hungary is unknown. The terms of the transfer were agreed not to be disclosed.
Diaby is the fifth rookie introduced by Espen this week. In addition to the return of Betim Fazlia, the transfers of Nikolai Möller, Mihailo Stevanovic and Justin Janicek were also announced.
