Racist attack on Moukoko and Ngankam

Youssoufa Moukoko and Jessica Ngankam, black footballers for the German Under-21 National Team, were subjected to racist insults on social media.

Moukoko and Ngankam were subjected to racist abuse on social media after they failed to score in a penalty shootout during a 1-1 draw with Israel in Kutaisi, Georgia.

Reacting to this situation after the match, Moukoko said: “If we win, we will all be Germans. If we lose, ‘monkey’ comments come. He came to Jessica, he came to me. Those things have no place in football.”

After stressing that they wanted to help the team and that no player intentionally missed a penalty, the Cameroon-born youngster described the messages he received as “disgusting”.

Noting that she was constantly faced with these types of messages, Moukoko said, “This time it hurt a lot.” Moukoko, who played for Borussia Dortmund, said that there should be a reaction against this.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, on the other hand, described the racist insults against Moukoko and Ngankam as “inhumane and disgusting” in her Twitter post. Faeser said: “Our national footballers show the best of modern and diverse Germany, and these racist comments show the uglier side.”
