Another late shock for FCB

After a bitter run to the semi-finals of the Conference League, Basel also suffered a league setback. Despite the advantage, the home game with Lugano was only 1:1.

In the 84th minute, Renato Steffen, a former Basel player, took a free kick that went past all the players in the penalty area and finally past goalkeeper Marvin Hitz into the net. It was a well-deserved reward for the dedication of the Ticino team that dominated the second half.

On Sunday, the Basel team quickly realized that Thursday’s game against Fiorentina had left its mark. They left possession of the ball to the guests from Ticino and concentrated on set-pieces and quick counter-attacks. The first goal came in the 35th minute when FCB had a second good chance. Anton Kade moved to the center, where Andy Zekiri went. It was the 23-year-old striker’s eleventh league goal.

An attempt to maintain a narrow advantage over time failed. Even in the fourth match of the season, Lugano failed to win. Team Ticino almost scored the winning goal. In the 92nd minute, Mohamed Amura was able to single-handedly run out to Hitz – albeit from a suspicious offside position – but his shot failed because of the goalkeeper.

Finally, disappointment broke out in the home team. Defender Riccardo Calafiori received his second yellow card in the 94th minute, as did coach Heiko Vogel, who complained to the referee after the end of the game.
