UEFA plans to change Champions League ‘club ownership’ rule
UEFA is discussing the same teams that have the same owners to compete in the Champions League.
In an interview with former English footballer Gary Neville’s YouTube channel The Overlap, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said they are working to maintain or remove the current rule that prohibits clubs with the same ownership from playing in the same tournament.
Noting that there are five or six club owners who want to buy another club, Ceferin said: “We are not just thinking about Manchester United. The rule will stay the same or we will allow it. I’m not sure yet. We shouldn’t say ‘No’ to multi-club ownership investments, but we should see what kind of rules we put in place in this situation. Because the rules must be strict. he said.
After the US Glazer family decided to sell Manchester United, two major offers to buy the club came from owners with ties to teams in the top French league.
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar and British businessman Jim Ratcliffe tried to buy Manchester United.
Nice, one of the French teams, belongs to Ratcliffe’s Ineos group, and Paris Saint-Germain belongs to the Qatar Wealth Fund. (AA)
