Missed the Swiss Cup semi-final: St. Gallen lost at home to Basel

St. Gallen lost 2-1 to Basel in Kibunpark on Wednesday evening. Thus, the Espen do not qualify for the cup semi-finals. Here you can read the ticker game.

In the tenth minute on Wednesday night in Kibunpark, the team from St. Gallen took the lead. Jordi Quintilla, who left Eastern Switzerland for six months at the FCB in 2021 and then returned, found an interface in the Basel defense and fit into Christian Witzig’s move.

It came through the center, where Jérémy Guilmeneau had enough time and space to get the ball in easily. The St. Gallen striker, like Basel’s Zeki Amdouni, has already scored in two league title duels between the two sides.

Two post shots of Basel

Basel entered the game better during the first half, but acted too hesitantly in the penalty area on several occasions. Andi Zekiri came closest to equalizing in the 38th minute. His header from a corner hit Espen’s body.

Both teams had reserve goalkeepers in the cup. However, in the quarter-finals, Basel did without Mirko Salvi, and instead relied on the main goalkeeper Marvin Hitz.

Peter Seidler, in turn, trusted Lukas Watkowiak and thanked him with a spectacular double save shortly after the break. Michael Lang missed the German goalkeeper twice at close range.

However, in the 58th minute, Vatkovyak also had no chance. This time, Fabian Frei found a joint in defense and launched Andi Zekiri, who deservedly equalized the score right off the bat. With a good ten minutes left, Amdouni already had a chance to score the winning goal. But the FCB forward saw his shot bounce off the post.

In the 95th minute, 22-year-old Amduni hit the target after rebounding from the post and won the match with his shot into the net. It was his eighth goal since the World Cup break. Basel turned the intense cup game around after falling behind.

Explosion of the St. Gallen Cup dream

The Swiss player (only one match so far) should have more luck in extra time. Thanks to Amdouni, Basel is in the semi-finals of the Swiss Cup. For St. Gallen, who have reached the final twice recently, the competition this season ended in the quarter-finals.
