After the defeat of their team by FC St. Gallen, several Sion fans reached the visitors’ sector and threw pyrotechnic objects at the fans. FCSG fans responded to the attack and pushed back the arsonists. The security forces intervened only two minutes later.
The Disciplinary Committee of the Swiss Football League has completed an investigation into the incident. FC St. Gallen and FC Sion were fined CHF 20,000 each.
In addition, the north stand, home curve of the tourbillon, will be closed for FC Sion’s next home match against FC St. Gallen (25 February).
The Disciplinary Commission writes that “in the past, there have been cases of sector closures, when pyrotechnic objects were thrown at people, which poses a clear danger to life and health.”
The decision is not yet final and clubs can appeal to the Swiss Football League Court of Appeal within five days.
In a similar case in 2021, FC Zurich fans threw pyrotechnics into the GC fan sector. Both clubs had to pay fines of several tens of thousands of francs. In the next two home games against GC, FCZ was penalized with disqualification from the south stand.
