The honorary president of Real Madrid Amancio Amaro Varela dies
Amancio Amaro Varela, honorary president of the Spanish giant Real Madrid, has died at the age of 83.
Amancio Amaro Varela, who played for Real Madrid between 1962 and 1976, won 6 European Cups, 9 Leagues and 3 Spanish Cups, played 471 games in 14 seasons and scored 155 goals.
Amaro, one of the mythical names of the Madrid club, received a superior merit medal from the Government for his contribution to the world of Spanish sport.
The Club Real Madrid announced that Amaro’s body will be placed in the stands of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and will be open to visitors until noon tomorrow. Numerous personalities from Club Barcelona and from the world of football have expressed their condolences on the death of Amaro.
On the other hand, it was reported that before the Liverpool-Real Madrid match tonight in the Champions League, a minute of silence will be observed in memory of Amaro and the Madrid players will wear black bands. (AA)
