The waves of North Beach become the cemetery of Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire
Brazilian athlete Marcio Freire died surfing in Portugal.
The Portuguese National Coast Guard Command announced that Freire, 47, died while surfing on the North Beach of the city of Nazare, famous for its huge waves.
Freire, who fell off his surfboard while training, was said to have been pulled from the water, but the surfer, whose heart stopped, could not be saved despite first aid interventions.
The North Beach of Nazare stands out as one of the favorite places for professional surfers, thanks to its huge waves. Earlier, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner managed to break the athlete’s record for surfing the biggest wave on North Beach.
Steudtner, who surfed for more than 30 seconds on the 26.2-meter wave in October 2020, broke the world record. The two previous records were also broken by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa and American Garrett McNamara at the same location.

Authorities announced that this is the first time a surfer has been killed in North Beach, although there have been many surfing accidents before. (AA)
