Unai Emery leaves Villarreal to sign for Aston Villa
Spanish coach Unai Emery has left Villarreal in Spain, which he has managed since July 2020, to sign for Aston Villa Club in England.
Emery unilaterally terminated his contract with Villarreal, which was normally valid until June 30, 2023. England’s Aston Villa Club, who sacked manager Steven Gerrard following their league defeat, announced they signed Emery.
The 50-year-old Spanish coach, who has 4 UEFA Europa League titles (3 Sevilla, 1 Villarreal) in his career, managed the Arsenal team between 2018-2020.
The Spanish press wrote that the English club will pay Villarreal 6 million euros for the unilateral termination of Emery’s contract.
Enrique Setien is reportedly Villarreal’s first candidate as new manager.
