Justice is finally coming for some of the liars and cheats who enabled Trump
Election 2024

The arc of the moral universe, which is supposedly long and bends toward justice, seems finally to be moving closer to its goal.
A series of events in recent days, such as Ronna McDaniel’s defenestration, John Eastman’s threatened suspension, and Kari Lake’s capitulation in a defamation lawsuit, suggest a reckoning is upon us.
It’s occupied
a while
. Too long to satisfy those who prefer justice to come quickly rather than surely.
But the humiliation that comes to McDaniel, the sanctioning of Eastman and Lake
,
as well as the capture of Peter Navarro, the Clinton Democrat turned Trump flunky, all bring a welcome and much-needed degree of accountability.
Perhaps their punishment will deter others who might similarly attempt to overthrow free and fair elections, insulting the country’s values and attacking our democracy with their deception.
The four differ in their actions. But they all sprang from the same poisoned seed
:,
Donald Trump’s lie about the 2020 election, which he clearly and undisputedly lost to Joe Biden.
McDaniel,
while they then-
head of the Republican National Committee, not only helped spread Trump’s lie but also tried to pressure officials in Michigan, her home state, to withhold the certification of Biden’s victory there.
Her reward was a $300,000-a-year contract to serve as a political commentator for NBC, which soiled itself with a misguided attempt to bring political diversity to election coverage.
The network backed down and dumped McDaniel only after a notable on-air revolt from several prominent personalities, who rightly questioned the platforming of a fabulist and complicit in attempted election sabotage.
As MSNBC host Rachel Maddow succinctly put it, “You wouldn’t hire a gangster to work in a district attorney’s office, would you?

Eastman’s comeuppance came a day after McDaniel’s unceremonious departure, when a California State Bar judge recommended the lawyer lose his law license for helping devise a cockamamie scheme to defeat Trump despite his election defeat to keep in power.
It’s one thing to diligently advise, said Judge Yvette Roland, whose recommendation for suspension goes to the state Supreme Court. However, Eastman’s inaccurate claims were lies that cannot be justified as zealous advocacy.

she concluded.
Although it would have been nice if the judge had gone further than the $10,000 fine imposed on Eastman, which seems like a pittance considering the damage done by the former dean of the Orange County Law School.
It’s not pretend

testing a new theory in a moot court, or engaging in “creative” law practice, as he claimed in a self-pitying podcast interview.
Eastman wanted to override and invalidate the judgment of more than 80 million Americans who voted for Biden and cast their votes with complete confidence that the outcome would be honored, just as they had been in America for the past 200-plus years.

The four-month prison sentence is just the latest embellishment on Navarro’s unusual career path as environmentalist San Diego mayoral candidate and Democratic congressman-turned-hopeful MAGA loyalist will fall on his sword.
Finally, there’s Arizona’s crappy Lake Kari.
She ran for governor in 2022 as a Trump wannabe and continued to do so for months after losing, falsely claiming that she too was a victim of election fraud.
Her deception resulted in a defamation lawsuit filed by the head of Maricopa County’s Republican elections, against which Lake is now running for U.S. Senate. Last week she asked a judge to skip the trial and go straight to determining damages.
We’re hoping for a huge squeeze on Lake’s bank account, followed by a resounding rejection by Arizona voters.
Of course, the impresario of all destruction and duplicity has not yet imposed criminal sanctions on Trump.
That moment may be approaching, as a jury in New York City will hear the case next month

It’s tempting to turn away and spare the annoying details. But it’s important to remember the context.
The panicked payment to Daniels came after Trump bragged about committing sexual assault in the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape, bringing his candidacy to the brink of collapse.

That leaves it up to voters to pass their judgment on Trump, which should be a clear and unequivocal drubbing at the ballot box.
But for now, at least, there’s satisfaction in holding accountable at least some of the fraudsters and imposters who made his rampant misdeeds possible.
