Jim Jordan falls short in voting for Speaker of the House of Representatives

The House of Representatives failed Tuesday to elect Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan as its next speaker, adding to the uncertainty that followed the historic impeachment of Rep. Kevin McCarthy earlier this month.

Jordan, a Republican, fell short of the majority he needed to secure the top position, with 20 members of his own party voting against him. IF WINS The House on Tuesday elected Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan as its next speaker, ending the uncertainty that followed the

historic impeachment of Representative Kevin McCarthy

and strengthening the far-right wing as the main faction of the Republican Party. Jordan received xx votes, more than the minimum of 217 he needed to secure the top spot. XX Republicans voted against him.

The entire Democratic caucus voted for their candidate, New York House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Another vote is expected, but it is unclear whether Jordan will gather enough votes to win the gavel.

Meanwhile, votes in the House of Representatives on other legislative issues remain at a standstill. Before the vote, Rep. Patrick McHenry (RN.C.), who currently serves as speaker pro tempore, told reporters that he opposes expanding his powers, indicating that he would not work with Democrats to get the House running again.

Jordan’s failed vote comes less than a week after Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise fell short in his own bid to become speaker. Scalise retreated

as a nominee

after it became clear he would not have enough votes to get the gavel in a floor vote.

Jordan, who has never served in party leadership, is a darling of the right and was endorsed by former President Trump.

He is a fixture on conservative talk shows, regularly bringing Democrats and liberals to power. The rhetoric earned him attention from party leaders, who named him the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee in 2019 and the House Judiciary Committee in 2020. Both committees are generally a space for troublemakers, not dealmakers.

as opening chairman.

At a press conference on Friday, Democratic leader Jeffries noted that Jordan “didn’t pass a single bill during his 16-year tenure in Congress… because his focus wasn’t on the American people.”

The Ohioan has been an outspoken critic of President Biden, often refusing to vote on Biden-backed legislation.

Jordan strengthened his loyalty to Trump in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election when he questioned the results. He was a key player in Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, according to the Jan. 6 House of Representatives select committees report.

When Jordan won the Republican nomination for chairman on Friday, a wave of Republicans signaled they would not support him. Over the past weekend, however, he and others have been working behind the scenes and on social media to pressure them

it

for the speakership.

Their lobbying campaign initially angered a faction of moderates who said they planned to challenge Jordan through a vote.

The Republican party has struggled to agree on a leader who has paralyzed the House of Representatives.

Although McCarthy managed to secure the support he needed to become chairman in January after an unprecedented 15 votes, conservatives in his party have grown frustrated in recent months after he struck deals with Democrats to avoid bankruptcy. debt and government shutdown.

Jordan voted in May to suspend the

debt limit

and against the September bill to delay the shutdown.

As speaker, Jordan would have to deal with this deep rift while facing a series of issues, including a new deadline for the government shutdown next month.

He would also have to deal with the escalating conflict in and around the Gaza Strip. The attack launched by Hamas militants

earlier this month

led to calls for additional military aid for Israel. The House of Representatives has been unable to approve new aid or express its position on the conflict due to the lack of a permanent speaker.

The Biden administration is also said to be banking on Jordan as speaker to organize a floor vote to get legislation for additional military aid to help Ukraine fend off Russian invaders. While additional funding for the war-torn country remains bipartisan among lawmakers, a growing number of rank-and-file Republicans have grown skeptical about continued U.S. investment and have expressed reluctance to send more military aid.

The Pentagon has pressured House Republicans to approve further funding, warning that Russia could win the war if U.S. support for Ukraine dries up.

Jordan’s election and the departure of McCarthy, a Republican from Bakersfield, from leadership of the House of Representatives and the

death of Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein

By the end of September, California’s power in Washington was greatly reduced. In 2021, both parties in the House of Representatives were led by Californians, and Vice President Kamala Harris, a Los Angeles native, presided over the Senate as speaker of the chamber during key votes. Now only Harris remains. And although Governor Gavin Newsom appointed senator.

Since the Russian invasion, Jordan has voted for only one major financing package, according to Defending Democracy Together, an anti-Trump conservative nonprofit that earned him an F on its name.

. Jordan told reporters earlier this month that he would oppose additional aid, saying Ukraine is not the most pressing issue in the eyes of the Americans. Jordan could tie funding for Ukraine to a larger package aimed at boosting military support for Israel and increasing security for the country. at the U.S. southern border, and could use the Nov. 17 shutdown deadline as leverage to get the White House to agree to this Republican Party priority. Prior to the vote, there would have been four Republicans

Jordan impressed that he would allow a floor vote on a Ukraine-Israel financing bill. While Jordan could be a boost for his party nationally, he also has potential liabilities that could explode when HBO releases a George Clooney-produced documentary about the decades-long sex abuse scandal at Ohio State University. Jordan’s tenure as an assistant college wrestling coach overlapped with that of a team doctor who abused hundreds of student athletes. Some of these wrestlers told The Times last week that Jordan knew about the abuse, though the Ohioan has repeatedly

some knowledge of the doctor’s actions. His denials have upset survivors and advocates who repeatedly complained about the lawmaker
