The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday attempted to block a developer-planned luxury hotel in Benedict Canyon amid opposition from environmental groups and the council member representing the hilly neighborhood.

By 6 votes, the council supported Councilman Katy Yaroslavsky’s motion asking the city’s planning director to intervene and consider shutting down the proposed Bulgari Resort Los Angeles.
Developer Gary Safady’s planned 58-room hotel is already undergoing the city’s environmental assessment process after an initial hurdle to city planning was cleared several years ago. However, the resort has not been approved by the city council and must be voted on again once the environmental assessment is complete.
Yaroslavsky argues that the hotel is not suitable for the Santa Monica Mountains, especially given the growing threat of wildfires. She has spent the past few months trying to prevent the project from going through the review phase.
“The last thing we should be doing is putting a hotel in the middle of a peak

The ministry said in a statement that it will “carefully consider” the municipality’s request.
“The department will review a number of factors, including those mentioned in the city council motion and during council deliberations, and make a decision,” the statement said.
Yaroslavsky submitted her motion to the council earlier this spring, but her colleagues stalled, so another vote had to be taken. Some members had expressed concerns about intervention during the environmental assessment of a project.
Councilman Traci Park, who represents the Westside, voted in favor of the motion on Wednesday after voting against it in May.
Park told the council she had spoken to “voters from across the hills, including many of my own county residents who care deeply about our natural resources and are concerned about the precedent this project sets for the health of our Santa Monica Mountains. “
