Attorney General Att. Gene.
Merrick Garland announced Friday that he is appointing special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation, deepening the investigation into the president’s son ahead of the 2024 election.
Garland said he is appointing special counsel David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware who has investigated the financial and business dealings of the president’s son.
Garland said Tuesday that Weiss had told him he believes his investigation has reached a stage where he should continue his work as special counsel, and has asked to be appointed.
After considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances surrounding this case, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel, Garland said.
The move is a momentous development from the usually cautious Garland and comes amid a pair of sweeping Justice Department investigations into Donald Trump, the former president and president.
