“A bus carrying migrants from Texas arrived at Union Station today around 6:30 p.m. PT,” said Zach Seidl, a spokesman for
Mayor Karen Bass’ office
. “The city has continued to work with city departments, the county and a coalition of nonprofits, in addition to our partners of faith, to implement a plan that was created earlier this year. As we have done before, we activated our plan when we became aware of the bus yesterday.”
According to the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), about half of the people aboard the bus came from Venezuela, while others came from Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti and Honduras. A spokesperson for the nonprofit said the bus left Brownsville, Texas, at 4:25 p.m. Monday.
The group consisted of 35 adults and six children, including a 1-year-old, the coalition said in a statement. Initially, 45 asylum seekers left Texas, but according to a coalition spokesman, a family of four in Arizona was taken off the bus to meet with their sponsors in Arizona. After the bus arrived at Union Station, the asylum seekers were provided with a full meal, clothing, hygiene kits and a basic health check, coalition CHIRLA said. More than a dozen of the group plan to remain in Los Angeles, while others move on to other destinations, including Phoenix, Washington state and elsewhere in California, the coalition said. Since the first bus arrived at Union Station in mid-June, the coalition has welcomed 154 migrants transported from Texas to Los Angeles by the Abbott administration. “We don’t consider these bus episodes to be well-intentioned. Texas and Florida have shown a callous disregard for the human experience, especially when it comes to black and brown-skinned asylum seekers,”
Angelica Salas, CHIRLAs
of the coalition
executive director, said in a statement.
“Transporting migrants everywhere in the middle of a hot summer is not nice, it is cruel and unjustified.
“As an organized collective in Los Angeles and advocates for a more humane and just society for immigrants, we will do what we must to protect the dignity and safety of these families when they arrive,” he said.

Officials planned to connect the migrants with loved ones throughout Southern California, as well as in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Washington, D.C., according to the organization CHIRLA.
The previous bus, which arrived on July 13, had 30 migrants on board. Two earlier buses arrived on June 14 and July 1, carrying 42 and 41 migrants respectively. Texas has funded the transportation of more than 22,000 migrants to Democratic-led cities across the US, including New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver and Philadelphia
, as part of Abbott’s protest against federal Democrats’ immigration policies. Abbott’s office did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday morning. Times staff writer Nathan Solis contributed to this report. This is an evolving story.
