The Rutte IV cabinet fell due to the persistent asylum issue. After days of crisis consultations, the governing parties VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie have not reached an agreement on a stricter asylum policy. This was reported by sources at NOS.
Earlier this week, the VVD suddenly demanded that there be a plan by the government before the weekend to limit the number of asylum seekers in the Netherlands. Besides that, Prime Minister Mark Rutte also submitted his request, in order to fulfill the promise made earlier at the last VVD congress. There he promised his supporters to limit the influx of asylum seekers.
He has sharpened negotiations within the cabinet by demanding that there be a quota on the number of family members who can be reunited with war refugees who had previously sought safety in the Netherlands. This request particularly irritated the ChristenUnie. For that party, family reunification is a matter of principle. D66 was also not a fan of Rutte’s request.
Due to the cabinet fall, elections will be held later this year. When is not yet known. Due to the fall, Rutte IV’s cabinet lasted just a year and a half.
