Atmosphere of crisis in the government on migration: VVD puts pressure on Related articles

Prime Minister and VVD leader Mark Rutte reportedly significantly increased pressure on asylum consultations on Wednesday evening, insiders around the coalition say. Rutte would like to vote on the package of measures in the Cabinet on Friday if the four coalition parties disagree tonight.

It leads to strains in the toilet. The CDA calls the prime minister’s actions a “strange stylistic signature”, and other sources say Rutte is pushing the matter to a head. That there is a climate of crisis is confirmed by all sources.

To the hole

“If this is a negotiating tactic, it’s rather clumsy,” a source told ANP news agency. The largest ruling party seems willing to do everything to get tougher asylum measures. Other parties consider this attitude ‘irresponsible’. Such a vote almost never happens, because it is assumed that the ruling parties can reach a compromise that everyone can live with.

The VVD takes a hard line when it comes to family reunification, which is met with resistance from D66 and ChristenUnie. Such parties would only be willing to limit “excesses” in this area. They can agree that only nuclear family members can travel in connection with family reunification. In general, it seems that the task of getting out of it is not impossible, as long as everyone remains of good will.

I play hard

There are therefore doubts about the VVD’s motivations for playing such a tough game. The parties point out that the influx of asylum seekers this year appears to be lower than the 70,000 that had previously been taken into account. Especially D66 and ChristenUnie on the one hand and VVD on the other hand oppose each other. For the CDA it is particularly important that an agreement is reached, so that the cabinet does not fall and that the governing parties show that they can reach an agreement together.

Incidentally, it’s not just the position of the VVD that is against the sore leg. The, according to some, adamant attitude of D66 and ChristenUnie also leads to furrowed eyebrows.

Although the atmosphere is about to cut, it is not yet clear what the result is. It is not said that the toilet will fall if there is no parcel on Friday, insiders say. “As long as we’re talking, there’s going to be movement either way,” says an insider. Earlier today, Secretary of State Eric van der Burg (Asylum and Migration) said again that he assumes a decision will be made by the Cabinet on Friday.
