Jan Anthonie Bruijn (VVD) was re-elected president of the Senate. The Liberal just won the vote against Labor Party member Mei Li Vos. Bruijn received 44 votes, Vos 26. A handful of votes were invalid.
Re-election comes as no surprise. Senate newcomer and largest party BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) had previously indicated that he supported Bruijn. With sixteen seats for the BBB and ten for the VVD, Bruijn already seemed certain of the 38 votes needed.
Bruijn has also served as President of the Senate for the past four years, but has been in the news in recent weeks due to alleged misconduct against officials. In a reply, Bruijn said he has been “rightly” held responsible for his behavior in the past, but he denies there were any outbursts of anger.
“I will do my best to be a good president for all members and all employees,” he said after his re-election. Bruijn has been a member of the Senate since 2012 and president since 2019. He is generally liked by members, although right-wing parties sometimes find him too harsh.
