According to lawyer and America expert Kenneth Manusama, small cracks can be seen between former President Donald Trump and his colleagues in the Republican party. Trump was arraigned yesterday in federal court where he faced 37 charges against him. He later gave a speech in New Jersey, where he vowed to prosecute President Joe Biden if Trump becomes president.
37 charges, yet Trump supporters were clapping outside the courtroom. Plus, all kinds of Republican celebrities like Fox News have spoken out against Biden. But there are also some Republican senators who are starting to distance themselves slightly from the former president. Like presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who called the situation “reckless” and “not good”.
More and more Republicans recognize that the facts are serious. Trump’s party members always have to do the political calculation: How far do I still want to associate with Trump, given the election and the future of America? According to Manusama, members of his party are increasingly uncertain about the tactics to follow. “People have been fed up with Trump for a while now, not just with his presidency, but with the storming of the Capitol and the 2020 election.”
“Republican Establishment”
“Establishment Republicans” are people with some important positions within the party, such as a seat in the Senate. As an example, Manusama cites former Attorney General Bill Barr, who admitted that Trump’s case is very damaging. Trump supporters don’t like the establishment, because they too are slowly starting to oppose Trump.
“Gets energy from all the attention”
Florida presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has not yet commented on the lawsuit. “This shows how serious this case is,” Manusama says. “DeSantis is the one who most resembles Trump in behavior but also in political positions”.
The fact that he says nothing and does not support Trump in this matter, according to Manusama, indicates that he is afraid of the moderate Republican voter. Furthermore, he also has to take into account the independent voter, who is likely to play an important role in the general election. That’s why he keeps it low key. When the wind has passed, it will start again with the anti-alarm clock and so on,’ says Manusama.
Trump’s birthday
Today is Trump’s birthday. That’s why yesterday he was loudly serenaded by his supporters in a Cuban café after the indictment. Despite everything, Manusama thinks Trump has a nice birthday today. “It thrives on these kinds of controversies. It gets energy from all the attention. All major supporters are very angry but enthusiastic about Trump himself and fully support him. He loves it.’
That hard core of Trump supporters still hold the Republican Party in their grip. Because of this, it’s hard for Republican politicians to distance themselves from him, “that’s why it’s not yet a definitive break between Trump and those politicians,” says Manusama.
