Starting the fight against peak load nitrogen Related articles

From today, farmers and entrepreneurs can check if they are eligible for certain schemes to increase sustainability or stop their activities. This is what Minister Christianne van der Wal (Nature and nitrogen) writes in a letter to the House of Representatives. The minister stresses that participation is voluntary.

Entrepreneurs can submit plans for sustainability and reduction of nitrogen emissions via a tool on the website tackpiekbelasting.nl. Furthermore, there are various schemes to make sustainability possible. Entrepreneurs who want to quit can use a one-off termination scheme.

Support

‘Making choices about the future of the farm has an impact on farmers, their families and the surrounding environment, I understand that well. This is why we will support them as much as possible’, writes the minister in a letter to the Chamber. ‘For a strong nature, a healthy company, sustainable production and a livable landscape, it is important that every entrepreneur thinks about the future of the company.’

However, not all innovation and sustainability programs have been completed yet. The website www.pakpeakbelasting.nl then explains what the patterns could look like. There should be more clarity on this in the coming months.

Threshold value

An entrepreneur can participate in the approach if the nitrogen deposition exceeds the threshold value. This is the case when a business causes at least 2500 mol of nitrogen deposition per year on an overburdened nitrogen sensitive nature within 25 kilometers.

To check whether this applies to a business, an entrepreneur can use the tool (called AERIUS-Check). Company details such as location, type of household and number of animals are required to complete the tool. The data and results entered are not stored and are not available to the government, according to the letter to Parliament.
