The Florida grand jury is now involved in the investigation of Trump documents in addition to those of Washington

Federal prosecutors are using a Florida grand jury as part of their investigation into the possible mishandling of classified documents at former President Trump’s Palm Beach property, a person familiar with the case said Tuesday evening.
The grand jury joins a separate panel that has been meeting in Washington for months to consider charges against Trump for holding hundreds of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and potentially obstructing government efforts to recover the documents .
It’s not clear why prosecutors are using an additional grand jury described to the Associated Press by a person who insisted on anonymity to discuss classified proceedings or who could testify for them.
A variety of witnesses, including Trump attorneys, close associates and Trump Organization officials, have appeared before the grand jury in Washington over the past year. But the use of a different Florida grand jury suggests prosecutors in that state may also be eyeing at least some possible indictments.
Column: Investigation of DOJ classified documents may soon be concluded. This is why Trump should be concerned
The Mar-a-Lago investigation, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team of prosecutors, is believed to be in its final stages and an indictment decision is expected soon. Trump’s lawyers met with Justice Department officials Monday, including Smith, as part of an effort to raise concerns about what Trump’s legal team believes is prosecutorial misconduct and to argue against a potential indictment.
The investigation has focused not only on the possession of classified documents, including documents marked top secret, but also on Trump’s refusal to return the documents when asked and possible obstruction. The FBI issued a subpoena for classified documents at the property last year and, after suspecting that Trump and his representatives failed to return all of the documents, returned with a search warrant and recovered an additional 100 documents with classification marks.
Investigators questioned a Trump aide who was seen on surveillance camera moving boxes of documents in Mar-a-Lago. As part of an obstruction investigation based in part on surveillance footage, investigators more recently expressed interest in an employee pumping out a swimming pool at the resort last October, an act that caused a flood at the property, according to another person on the record. condition of anonymity. That area of interest was first reported by CNN.
A spokesman for Smith, the special prosecutor, declined to comment Tuesday evening on the existence of another grand jury.
