Santa Barbara County officials are launching an investigation into the prison death

Santa Barbara County officials launched Monday an investigation into the death of a man held in custody at the Northern Branch Jail in Santa Maria, according to the sheriff’s office.

Prison and medical staff found the unidentified man in his cell at around 2:19 p.m. while doing medical rounds in one of the jails, according to a statement released Monday. The man was unresponsive and not breathing.

Prison officials administered two rounds of Narcan, a nasal spray that reverses an overdose, performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator.

a device used to ease heart attacks. Additional medical staff were called to the prison, “but the deceased did not recover and was pronounced dead at 2:46 p.m. without having been transported,” the statement said.

Officials are not releasing the person’s name until they can contact his family.
