A magazine columnist who says Donald Trump raped her in a department store locker room two decades before he became president acknowledged Monday that she didn’t follow her own advice to readers that they report sexual assaults to police.

E. Jean Carroll told a Manhattan federal court jury that she was born in 1943 and was a member of the silent generation, taught to keep her chin up and not complain. She said she only called the police once in her life when she feared the mailbox of a house she was staying in would be damaged on Halloween.

Carroll described her stance on going to the police when Trump’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, confronted her during cross-examination about cases where she advised those who read her column in Elle magazine to contact the police or a hotline for sex crimes call if they were attacked.

The fact that I never went to the police is not surprising for someone my age,” she said. We were never trained to call the police.

Carroll, who is testing for the third day in the civil trial stemming from her November trial, has said Trump raped her in the spring of 1996 in a luxury department store in midtown Manhattan after they entered a locker room together in an encounter which she said was fun and flirty until Trump turned violent. She said she eventually kneed him and fled.

The 76-year-old Trump has long denied that a rape took place, that he was in the store with Carroll, or that he even knew her beyond fleeting moments when photos of them were taken in groups in other years. He has not been present at the trial, which is expected to last all week.

Carroll’s renewed testimony came shortly after Tacopina asked Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, who oversees civil proceedings in federal court, to declare a mistrial due to rulings he made that Tacopina said favored Carroll .

Tacopina said that if a mistrial was not granted, Kaplan’s pervasive unfair and prejudicial rulings should correct the record for rulings that may have mischaracterized the evidence or give Tacopina more leeway in questioning Carroll.

The judge appeared to deny the request before resuming testimony Monday and asking Tacopina if the motion he found on his desk in the morning had been filed.

It is now denied. Okay, get the jury, Kaplan said.

Carroll has filed a lawsuit against Trump under a New York state law that temporarily allows victims of sexual assault to sue others for assaults that occurred even decades ago.

Amid a flurry of public denials and insults from Trump that led Carroll to add a defamation claim to the lawsuit, Trump has insisted that Carroll was motivated by political reasons and a desire to sell copies of the 2019 memoir in which she first publicly revealed her rape allegations. while Trump was still president.

Carroll has testified that she would have kept her accusation a secret forever if it weren’t for the #MeToo movement, which rose to prominence in 2017.

During Thursday’s testimony, Carroll became frustrated when Tacopina pressured her about how she said she was responding to an attack by his client.

You can’t beat me up for not yelling, Carroll told Tacopina forcefully. She had explained in previous testimonials that she was not a yeller, I am a fighter.

She said if she had lied about the attack she would have told people she screamed because more people would have believed me.

But, she insisted, I don’t need an excuse not to scream.

In its mistrial Monday, Tacopina complained that Kaplan cut off his questioning when he pressured Carroll to explain why she didn’t yell, why she didn’t tell police or later try to retrieve footage from store door video cameras to to prove that she and Trump were in there together.

The Associated Press usually doesn’t name people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Carroll has done.
