John King leaves CNN’s ‘Inside Politics’ for a new role. His ex-wife Dana Bash will replace him

WASHINGTON DC-FEBRUARY 22, 2011: CNN anchors John King and Dana Bash at Childhelp’s annual Capitol Careaoke event in the atrium ballroom of the Ronald Reagan Building. Founded in 1959 by Sara OMeara and Yvonne Fedderson (they played Ricky and David Nelson’s girlfriends in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet), Childhelp is one of the oldest and largest non-profit organizations dedicated to the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect. Childhelp’s residential treatment villages are located throughout the United States. ABC7’s Rebecca Cooper founded this annual fundraiser for Childhelp called Capitol Careaoke where many local celebrities sing karaoke over the seated dinner. In its fourth year, this is a fantastic event and it’s kind of fun to see slightly tipsy anchors from CNN take on Fox News in song! The event raised approximately 150,000 through ticket sales and the silent auction…the average ticket costs $500.00 Tracey Madigan and Suzanne Singer co-chaired the event. John King, CNN’s man on the magic wall, is leaving his daily program “Inside Politics” for a new role at the network.

CNN announced Thursday that King’s daily program will be taken over by Dana Bash,

a

chief political correspondent who also co-anchors the “State of the Union” Sunday program. Bash retains her role on Sunday.

In a side note that evokes a rom-com-plot

King and Bash are ex-husbands. They were married from 2008 to 2012 and have a son.

King has been anchoring “Inside Politics” since 2014. He is best known to viewers for maneuvering the touchscreen electoral map known as the “magic wall” during CNN’s election coverage.

The transfer of “Inside Politics” is the latest adjustment to the CNN lineup under chairman Chris Licht. The network recently revamped its daytime lineup with “CNN News Central.”

after a 17-year run on the network.

CNN has been in a state of turmoil over the past year, facing budget cuts and falling profits as ratings plummet.

King will lead a new reporting project that focuses on voters in key battlefield states as the 2024 presidential campaign cycle gets underway.

The assignment will allow King to track voters in those states and get their views on politicians and issues throughout the election cycle.

This is my back to the future dream assignment, King said in a statement. It’s my tenth presidential cycle and, given the stakes, I felt it was time to get back to my roots by reporting across the country.

King will continue to be part of CNN’s live election and special coverage.

Bash, 51, spent her

whole

30-year career with CNN as producer, correspondent and host. She co-moderated a primary Democratic presidential debate in 2019.

“John built an extraordinary show that has attracted a loyal audience of political junkies, and I look forward to leading the next chapter,” Bash said in a statement.
