Of the 22 megatons of CO2 we will have to emit less each year in 2030, industry will have to account for the majority: 5.2 megatons. Economic Affairs Minister Micky Adriaansens has made arrangements with the companies on this. “What we have now is a reasonable and doable package.”
The goal is to emit 55% less CO2 in 2030 than in 1990. And preferably even 60% less. And we won’t get there if industry and businesses don’t make great efforts. “All reports and calculations showed that we would not have made it with the current measures,” says Adriaansens. “So over the last few weeks we’ve been looking at how to distribute pain as evenly as possible. From my point of view, this is now a reasonable package for industry and companies that is feasible and feasible.’
It will be a combination of one-size-fits-all rules and customization for large companies that emit a lot of CO2. “We already had a list of twenty major companies requesting customization and we are now looking into how to expand that list,” the minister said. ‘Companies have already contacted us about it.’ The idea is to ask companies what their needs are, in exchange for an extra effort on their part.
Adriaansens admits that there are still obstacles to achieving the goals, even by the government itself. “We can ask a company to electrify and move away from gas, but then there has to be enough grid capacity. It’s not always like this now.’ The same, according to the minister, applies to the production of green hydrogen. ‘We have to work on this in the near future.’
He is not afraid of companies leaving the Netherlands because of these new measures. “We will enable companies to adapt and help them do so,” she says. And this also applies to SMEs. We have also explicitly made resources available for this.’
