At the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago, Russia made full use of its position as the EU’s main gas supplier. He put pressure on Europe by turning off the gas tap or threatening to do so. Then energy prices broke record after record.
Consultation in Brussels
The EU and the US met in Brussels on Tuesday to ensure energy availability. They “affirm their strong commitment to directly counter, with appropriate measures, all attempts to further destabilize the global energy situation,” they later said.
The EU weathered last winter easier than expected and is already busy filling up gas reserves for next winter. Member states are now buying a lot of liquid gas from elsewhere and investing heavily in a faster transition to sustainable energy.
