During today’s Council of Ministers, the cabinet will consider how to proceed after the elections. It looks like they won’t get there, because it took and it took. Now we can also honestly say that there is a crisis in The Hague, because it is very unusual not to come out after the consultation,’ explains Beekman.
The political reporter suspects that the letter from Europe on nitrogen policy plays a role in the fact that the cabinet has not decided yet. ‘D66 feels empowered by that, which makes things difficult, but they want to get out of this together. They could possibly submit a letter later, explaining how they want to improve the ‘important files’ policy. The House of Representatives will debate it on Tuesday.
Tensions
The Cabinet summit has already discussed twice this week how to deal with the big election victory of the BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB). There are strong tensions in the coalition regarding, among other things, nitrogen and the year in which the goals must be met. Especially between CDA and D66 it seems to crackle about this. The CDA has lost big electorally to the BBB and struggles with an overly strict nitrogen policy. D66 wants to speed things up and has previously spoken out in favor of speeding up. According to D66, forced takeover may also be a problem sooner.
