State Secretary for Justice and Security Erik van den Burg hopes for support from BoerBurgerBeweging regarding asylum policy. The BBB opposes coercion, and is therefore critical of the forced dispersal of asylum seekers. But according to Van den Burg, the so-called distribution law is actually beneficial for the countryside.
“The distribution law ensures a balanced distribution throughout the Netherlands,” explains Van de Burg. BBB wants more attention to be paid to the west of the Netherlands when it comes to welcoming refugees. According to him, it would therefore be logical for the party to support the distribution law.
In Randstad and in the big cities, the Secretary of State sees that they are currently doing less than necessary for the reception of refugees. It is mainly the small communities in the east and north of the country that take care of the shelter. “If the BBB really thinks something needs to be done about it, then I expect seventeen votes for the bill in the Senate and one vote in the House of Representatives.”

BBB’s victory in the provincial council elections must not be a hindrance to the current cabinet’s policy, Van den Burg expects. “We’ll just see how to get a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.” And when it comes to welcoming refugees, it is above all the municipalities that have to work on implementing the policy. “The provinces only have a supervisory and coordinating role in this”.
