“Obviously it’s not going well.” This is what CDA leader Wopke Hoekstra tells BNR in response to his party’s large seat loss in the recent provincial elections. According to Hoekstra, the CDA is very disappointed with the result and understands that the focus is on The Hague. “This is a bigger avalanche than four years ago with Forum or in 2001 with Fortuyn.”
The loss is so great – the Board will most likely still have 5 seats in the Senate – that it is not possible, according to Hoekstra, ‘to return to the agenda’. Hoekstra thinks this should have consequences “on content and style,” but he doesn’t want to say more about it. ‘And I think the assignment is just for us as a CDA to fight hard, even in the coming period. So I will definitely continue to do it with great conviction. This also applies to the parliamentary party and also to ministers here.”

End of the coalition agreement?
According to political journalist Sophie van Leeuwen, the CDA may want to break the coalition agreement on the nitrogen law. This much to D66’s chagrin. Where D66 leader Sigrid Kaag won’t say anything about it, D66 climate and energy minister Rob Jetten says he will talk to the provinces.
