The BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) may become the largest in as many as ten provinces in provincial council elections, according to surveys by research agency I&O Research. It will be a battle between the BBB, VVD and the joint front PvdA and GroenLinks. But Frank van Dalen, president of the Political Academy Foundation, doesn’t expect BBB, as winner, to really bring about change.
Limburg CDA deputy Madeleine van Toorenburg also does not believe that the BBB profit will lead to major changes. Van Toorenburg refers to the Forum for Democracy, which received the most votes as a newcomer in the previous election, but subsequently failed to prove itself.
“It was a drama, FvD fell apart pretty quickly,” says Van Toorenburg. The MP finds this a worrying development for parties that focus on only one or a few interests. “The BBB has one interest: farmers. I see that happening more and more often, but working together makes it much more complicated for parties that want to focus on multiple fronts. We don’t yet know how to deal with this development,” says Van Toorenburg.
Central parts up
This is why Van Dalen and Van Toorenburg believe that it is precisely the middle parties that have the right to move. “They have to translate the backlash from left and right into their day-to-day politics,” says Van Dalen. This way more balance can be created. “Provided that the parties do what they promise and think more carefully about the effects of the policy on the future,” says Van Dalen.
