Nearly 13.3 million people will be eligible to vote in the upcoming provincial council election on March 15, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) said on the basis of its provisional data. Among those entitled there are 800,000 young people who vote for the first time in the Provincial Council.
Over the past twenty years, the voting population has aged. This year almost 27% are 65 years of age or older, up from more than 18% in 2003. In the municipality of Laren (North Holland), the number of voters aged 65 and over is the highest, i.e. 40.7%.
Young voters
A quarter of those authorized to vote are under the age of 35. ) and Staphorst (29.5%). The provinces of Groningen and Utrecht have the highest proportion of young voters”, according to Statistics Netherlands.
Of the over 18s, 91.6 percent have the right to vote in the next provincial council elections. In 2019, this was still 93.3%. According to Statistics Netherlands, this is because more people have been added in recent years who do not (yet) have Dutch nationality.
Residents of the Caribbean Netherlands and Dutch citizens living abroad also vote through so-called constituencies. According to Statistics Netherlands, there are 14,600 voters in Bonaire, 1,900 in St. Eustatius and 900 in Saba.
