The House Ethics Committee announced Thursday that it is opening an investigation into embattled Republican Representative George Santos, the New York congressman whose lies and embellishments about his resume and personal life have come under intense scrutiny in Congress.

The commission’s bipartisan leaders announced that the panel had voted unanimously to create an investigative subcommittee to investigate the allegations. The panel voted to take action

Tuesday.

The research seems far-reaching. It is seeking to determine whether Representative George Santos may have been involved in illegal activities related to his 2022 congressional campaign, among other actions, the committee said in a statement.

The investigation will consider whether Santos “failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House, violated federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a fiduciary services company, and/or has engaged in sexual misconduct against a person seeking employment in his congressional office,” the statement said.

Santos’ office on Twitter said he is cooperating fully with the investigation and will not comment further.

Panel Leaders Republican Rep. David Joyce of Ohio and Democratic Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania will lead the probe, with two other lawmakers from each party.

Santos had already relieved himself of his committee duties, but otherwise he has refused calls from Republicans in New York to resign.

“The commission notes that the mere fact of establishing an investigative subcommittee does not in itself indicate that a violation has occurred,” the statement said.
