A new nitrogen map should give our country’s farmers perspective. According to GroenLinks, the cabinet promises everything, but assumes no liability. A map showing nature in the Netherlands from 2030 to 2040 “shows exactly what we want and where in the future,” says Laura Bromet, MEP for GroenLinks.
This map therefore goes beyond just Natura 2000 areas. “We have to allow nature to flourish throughout the Netherlands.” Bromet: ‘A ticket has become taboo, but this is nonsense. If you look at the map of the Netherlands in 2030 or 2040, it should be able to show a beautiful Netherlands. With interconnected natural areas, without intensive farming, where there are wooded banks and where the birds of the meadows are increasing in number instead of decreasing”.
Long term
Barring one ticket, according to GroenLinks, the cabinet needs to come up with schemes quickly for farmers who want to make a change. ‘A perspective letter has been promised twice, Minister Adema will consult with farmers to see what perspective they want. I think: go govern.’
Minister Van der Wal’s plans to take over the main nitrogen emitters are basically “very good”, Bromet thinks. “But these are about the short term. I would like to look long term, where are the farmers? You can put it on a map.’
The new consultation is postponed
According to Bromet, new rounds of consultations mean ‘postponing the implementation of policies. A lot has already been said, there are already a lot of projects. And the sector is very often not on the same wavelength. Based on what is known by now, the cabinet must show leadership and take action. This is what is missing now.’
Today and tomorrow the House of Representatives will debate agricultural policy in the Netherlands. “I hope for a good debate and for my colleagues to look beyond next year, but also for the long term.”
