Either you stop or you start becoming more sustainable. If you decide to stop, as a large nitrogen emitter you can receive up to 120 percent of your company’s value. With this proposal, the cabinet wants to actively approach around 3,000 “small shippers”. But the reactions are mixed. “Is putting it up for sale the only solution?”
For example, LTO Netherlands claims that this plan is in line with what was proposed by Johan Remkes. Farmers Defense Force and Agractie stress that the choice to resign should still be voluntary and raise questions about what the definition of a “peak loader” is. And Johan Vollenbroek of Mobilization for the Environment (MOB) wonders if that is enough and if the plan can count on the approval of the European Commission.
Details of the plan are not yet known. The Cabinet is expected to provide more information on Friday after the Cabinet meeting. But there is already hesitation in the House of Representatives. Caroline van der Plas of the Boer Citizen Movement wonders how the value of companies is determined.
‘After years finally planning’
And GroenLinks MP Laura Bromet is also critical. She likes the buyout scheme, but only when farmers get real prospects. “It is important that we finally make it. We have waited more than three years since the court ruling for the plans from the cabinet, and now they seem to be coming.’
Bromet hopes the government will make regulations for farmers who want to switch to agriculture that includes nature. ‘What should farmers who want to change but don’t know how to do? Or is putting it up for sale the only solution?’
“What does he really wear?”
According to the leaked plans, the government seems to be targeting 3,000 businesses, not just farmers. Sounds like a lot, but Bromet is key. ‘Now we are talking about it, but if 2,000 entrepreneurs say they are not interested, only 1,000 companies will remain. The question is what it will produce.’ These companies would receive 120 percent of their company’s value. For many entrepreneurs, this can be a push to retire early. “I guess you’ll use it to retire early, but when you’re thirty you won’t make it.”
